What are dentures?
Dentures are prosthetic devices that replace missing teeth. There are two kinds: partial and complete. As the name suggests, partial dentures involve just a few missing teeth. The partials can be removable appliances or fixed in place.
Complete dentures provide a full mouth of teeth, covering either the maxillary arch (the upper teeth) or the mandibular arch (the lower teeth). Complete dentures come out of the mouth for better cleaning and are available as conventional or immediate.
Conventional dentures go into place about eight to 12 weeks after the removal of the teeth and aren’t made until after your gums have healed. Immediate dentures can go in right away because they are made before tooth removal. Once the gums have healed, the immediate dentures need to be resized so they fit securely after swelling in your gums has gone down.
Which is better for complete dentures: conventional or immediate?
There are benefits to both, but, ultimately, conventional dentures are usually the wiser choice. As the mouth heals, the bones and gum tissue may shrink, so immediate dentures become problematic. Most dental professionals consider immediate dentures a temporary solution until conventional plates are ready.
