Periodontal problems, commonly referred to as “gum disease,” are responsible for 75% of tooth loss in adults. Dr. Yung and his team provide the finest alternatives and solutions for caring for and resolving gum disease or periodontitis.

Having your teeth professionally cleaned at least every six months, sometimes even more often, is important to remove any excessive plaque and to prevent its buildup. Plaque left untreated can lead to unhealthy gums and tooth decay. We perform thorough teeth cleanings that include scaling, root planning and polishing. Routine professional teeth cleaning is a key component in preventing problems down the road.

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, this may be a sign of periodontal disease which is caused by the bacteria that forms in dental plaque leading to infection. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is known as “gingivitis.” At this stage, gums may bleed slightly or be tender to the touch and red or puffy in appearance. This is the most important time to schedule an appointment with Dr. Yung, because gingivitis in reversible.

Periodontal disease, if left untreated, will undermine and destroy the jawbone structure that supports your teeth resulting in early or premature tooth loss.

Our Non-Surgical Treatments for Gum Disease

Dr. Yung’s treatment of choice for his patients is scaling and root planning. This non-surgical method cleans root surfaces of the tooth to remove plaque and tartar. Scaling and root planing can usually be accompanied by antibiotics to prevent and stop the formation of new bacteria. It is very important for individuals with gum disease to be diligent in scheduling routine visits every 3, 4 or 6 months. Dr. Yung and his team of wonderful hygenists will prescribe your follow-up visit schedule.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Scientists have linked gum disease to other health problems. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, people with gum disease are more likely to develop heart disease and have trouble controlling their blood sugar. In addition, women with gum disease were observed to be more likely to give birth to premature and low-birth-weight babies.
